Pharmacy Series with Miki Finnin, Pharm. D., BCPS, CGP

December 5, 2015 @ 8:00 am - December 6, 2015 @ 5:00 pm

We are inviting you to join us for a 2-day online pharmacy series with Dr. Miki Finnin.

Returning to Medicine Talk Pro by popular demand, Dr. Miki Finnin will present for 8 hrs of Rx CE on topics very relevant to what we encounter every day in practice.

Why do we love her so much? Because she is extremely familiar with Naturopathic Medicine and Doctors. As a Doctor of Pharmacy and a patient of Naturopathic Medicine, she has a unique perspective that makes the information she delivers applicable in practice. Read below for details about each topic.

We are applying for AANP CE approval as well as through the Canada Associations. As of now this CE is pending but because of her qualifications, Dr. Finnin’s material has always been approved.

Session 1 – Dec. 5th, 2015 @ 9-11 AM CST

Guideline Review: Immunizations, Hypertension, HyperLipidemia

Medical treatment guidelines are developed to present the compilation of data to allopathic medical practitioners so that disease states may be treated according to evidence-based medicine. The challenge, however, is to stay current with the ever-changing guidelines, ever-changing new medications being allowed on the market and staying on top of recommendations that physicians are giving to their patients that do not necessarily follow the current guidelines. This presentation will focus on the new recommendations for the pneumococcal vaccine and why physicians are telling their patients that they need a booster every 5 years. It will also address the current issues with the flu vaccine, the changes in the hypertension guidelines especially as they relate to the elderly population, and a review of the major changes in blood cholesterol treatment guidelines as they abandon the long-time LDL goals.

Session 2 – Dec. 5th, 2015 @ 11AM – 1PM CST

Chronic Pain

Appropriate treatment of chronic pain continues to be an issue in our healthcare systems. Our prescribing history has gone from periods of under treatment to more appropriate treatment with long-acting opioid analgesics, and now possibly back to under-treatment because of prescriber fear of legal ramifications due to over-prescribing. This presentation will focus on the pharmacologic alternatives in the treatment of chronic pain and the appropriate step-wise approach of prescribing, monitoring and removing agents as appropriate.

Session 3 – Dec. 6th, 2015 @ 9-11 AM CST

Prescription Drugs of Abuse

Mind altering substances have been a problem in our society for hundreds of years, even dating back to 4,000 BS with the use of the Papaver somniferum plant for its ability to relieve pain. In our current society, drug abuse continues to be a national problem, not only focusing on illegal substances, but also on legal prescription medications that are dispensed at a local pharmacy. This presentation will focus on the history of substance abuse, the local and national efforts being taken to combat this issue, the everyday factors that are contributing to this problem, a review of the medications that are most commonly used for their mind-altering properties and the medications used to assist in weaning off the addiction, and most importantly, the guidelines for responsible opioid prescribing. Although as Naturopathic Doctors or Holistic Physicians or caregivers you may not be prescribing these medications, it is important to understand the issues behind this epidemic so that hopefully you can identify a patient that presents with a condition of abuse and be able to assist them in their journey back to health.

Session 4 – Dec. 6th, 2015 @ 11AM – 1PM CST

The Pharmacologic Treatment of Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders are many, and in a large portion of this population, can be caused by multiple etiologies, sometimes confusing the diagnosis and respective treatment plans. This presentation will focus on a number of different sleep disorders, their root causes, the effect of sleep deprivation on the patient and the alternatives used for pharmacologic treatment. Because of the audience of Naturopathic Physicians and holistic practitioners, this presentation will also address the key issues to consider when suggesting to your patient to remove these pharmacologic agents from their sleep regimen in a safe and non-harmful step-wise approach.
