The risks of early breastfeeding cessation for the mother and infant are well known and extensively documented in various scientific literature. As a result, recent statistics for Toronto show 95.7% of mothers start breastfeeding, but at 6 months, only 17.5% of mothers are still exclusively breastfeeding. The reasons for the steep drop-off are multi-factorial and stress is one that is acknowledged, but not directly addressed by practitioners on a regular basis. Studies have shown that maternal and fetal stress, whether physiological or emotional may interfere with lactogenesis and the milk ejection reflex. Moreover, many of those mothers who prematurely wean may argue that breastfeeding itself is stressful. Yet, the act of breastfeeding has been found to increase parasympathetic nervous system modulation and decrease mother’s perception of stress and depressive symptoms (Mezzacappa, 2004). This is more likely to be true when there are no problems with the breastfeeding. Fortunately, the majority of problems that lead to early weaning can be prevented with proper support and management in the first few days.

In this session, we will take a “biopsychosocial” approach to describing the relationship between stress and breastfeeding and also illustrate the physiological mechanisms behind this relationship. Participants will learn about strategies, using various modalities, to help minimize stress and equip mothers with healthy coping mechanisms. In addition, they will learn about the key elements required for effective breastfeeding and about the basic tools to help mothers and babies get off to the best start and continue stress-free breastfeeding.
