SUMMARY:APND Western Symposium - Fertility\, Pregnancy & Birth!
DESCRIPTION:Share This ArticleJoin the APND in Vancouver for its FIRST Western Symposium.  We are very excited to be featuring Gloria Lemay and Anthony Cheung MD as they share their experience and expertise with you. \nGloria Lemay\, celebrated birth activist and educator\, will be presenting lively\, interactive session on Nutrition in Pregnancy\, Vaginal Birth After Cesarean\, and Waterbirth. \nTechnology in prenatal care is growing unabated but only two things are supported by science to improve the health of the fetus.  The first is improving the nutrition of the pregnant woman.  The second is social support for the pregnant woman.  In this workshop\, we’ll review practical methods of supporting pregnant women to eat\, not only for a baby to survive\, but rather to produce a blue ribbon baby who will have the very best chance to have a highly functioning brain and body. \nAs the rate of cesarean operations continues to climb ever higher\, more and more women want to have information on the safety and advisability of planning a vaginal birth after cesarean.  In this workshop\, we will look into the causes of the cesarean epidemic and how to best insure that women who want to avoid major abdominal surgery know how to get the odds on their side for a vaginal birth despite a uterine scar. The VBAC candidate often has special needs in pregnancy to overcome the trauma of her surgical experience psychologically.  The ability of her care providers to listen to her history and fears of the future birth can make a critical difference to the VBAC outcome.  Each time a woman gives birth\, her obstetrical future is at stake. \nThere is so much more to water birth than just getting into a tub!  Learn to assess the effect of water immersion on the birth process and to address safety concerns. Get tricks of the trade for creating the right environment for surrender and deep relaxation.  Gloria will address how to monitor vital signs\, maintaining the right temperature and cleanliness of the water\, handling meconium\, nuchal cord and stuck shoulders. \nAnthony P. Cheung\, MD  will be discussing Fertility Medications and Adjunct Therapy to Optimize Pregnancy Success in 2016. \nThis presentation explains current fertility medications and adjunct therapy used to optimize pregnancy success and related trends and controversies: \nWhat are the commonly used fertility medications and their roles? Anti-estrogen (Clomiphene\, Letrozole)\, Gonadotropins (FSH\, LH) and hCG. GnRH agonist and antagonist. \nWhen should progesterone be used for luteal phase support? \nWhat are the roles of some popular adjunct therapy?  Growth hormone\, DHEA\, low-dose aspirin and sildenafil\, etc. \nLifestyle\, diet and some supplements \nAcupuncture \nWe hope that you can join us to make this first APND event in BC a great success!  Space is limited. \nRegistration fees: \nAPND Members and Student Members: FREE! \nNon Members $125 \nStudent Non Members $50 \nemail info@apnd.org for more information \nShare This Article

SUMMARY:A Therapeutic Yoga Approach to Addressing Scoliosis (YOGA - 15SCOL01)
DESCRIPTION:Share This ArticleConfounded by how to ease the chronic discomfort of scoliosis\, either for yourself or for your clients? Scoliosis is a complex condition that can create a variety of physical symptoms from mild discomfort to debilitating pain and organ dysfunction. Come and learn how therapeutic yoga can address the muscular asymmetries caused by spinal curvature through active and passive postural work\, specific breathing practices to help de-rotate the spine\, and how to help yourself or your clients live and rest more comfortably in their bodies. Sun\, Jan 24\, 10 a.m-5 p.m. Instructor: Robin Rothenberg. (5.5 CEUs\, PDAs)\n\nDescription: While most of us have mild asymmetries right side to left\, those living with scoliosis have a three dimensional asymmetry that can put additional strain on the lungs and internal organs. Breathing and digestion can be inhibited and movement through life painful. The jigsaw puzzle of scoliosis often presents a challenge for yoga teachers and other bodywork and movement professionals. \nThis workshop is designed as a teaching clinic for both practitioners and those living with scoliosis to encourage all to see outside the box of traditional asana. We’ll customize practices to address each quadrant of the spine appropriately: rt/left thoracic; rt/left lumbar. Utilizing an array of tools and most importantly a way of understanding the particular structural needs of those living with moderate to severe scoliosis\, this course offers a means to bring balance and relief to areas of chronic tension and pain to those suffering with curvature of the spine. \nPlease identify whether you have scoliosis when registering for the course. \nUpon completion of the seminar you will be able to: \n\nIdentify and define the difference between structural and functional scoliosis.\nLearn how to see scoliosis and interpret the spinal curvature from a muscular perspective.\nDevelop adaptations of asanas that specifically stretch or strengthen each of the four quadrants of the spinal musculature appropriately.\nLearn to utilize rotational breathing to increase awareness and diminish spinal torsion.\nLearn how to prop yourself or your client to ensure greater ease when resting.\n\nPlease bring: Yoga mat\, large towel or blanket\, and comfortable clothes for movement. Personal water bottle (filtered water dispensers available on campus to refill). \nLocation: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus\, room #146.
