SUMMARY:Bastyr University Celebrates Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:Share This ArticleKenmore\, Wash. (October 29\, 2015) — Bastyr University will honor its history\, celebrate its current accomplishments and look forward to the future with a celebration Friday\, November 6\, 2015 in the historic and beautiful Bastyr Chapel. The event will feature a panel discussion with the three living founders of Bastyr University\, as well as serve an official welcome for Bastyr University President Charles “Mac” Powell\, PhD\, who recently passed his 100-day mark as leader of the University. \n“This will be a celebration of not only how far we’ve come in a short amount of time\, but also how bright our future looks thanks to all who have worked so tirelessly to make Bastyr University what it is today\,” says Dr. Powell. \nAt the event\, the three founders will share their memories of Bastyr’s humble beginnings in the late 1970s\, when the school had very few resources and a host of critics\, and trace the University’s success as it flourished into a preeminent\, well-respected natural health institution over the span of a few decades. \nDr. Powell will also have an opportunity to share his thoughts about the current state of Bastyr University\, as well as the challenges and opportunities he sees for impacting the future of natural medicine. \nThe event is free and open to the public. A reception with refreshments will immediately follow the panel. Bastyr University’s annual Founders’ Day Dinner takes place in Woodinville\, Wash. the following evening\, Saturday November 7\, 2015.  \nABOUT BASTYR UNIVERSITY \nBastyr University is internationally recognized as a pioneer in natural medicine. SUMMARY:American Council on Education Unveils Alternative Credit Project Course Pool
DESCRIPTION:Share This ArticleBastyr University Participating in Initiative to Help Nontraditional Learners Gain College Degrees and Credentials \nWashington\, DC (Nov. 4\, 2015)—The American Council on Education (ACE) recently announced the pool of courses selected as part of ACE’s Alternative Credit Project\,™ a groundbreaking initiative to boost the ability of millions of nontraditional learners to gain a college degree. \nThe 111 low- or no-cost\, lower-division general education online courses were submitted by a group of non-accredited course providers chosen to participate in the Alternative Credit Project. Bastyr University\, along with the 39 other colleges\, universities and systems taking part in the project\, has agreed to grant credit for a large number of these courses\, which include disciplines such as business\, critical thinking and writing\, foreign language\, humanities\, mathematics and natural and physical sciences. \nClick here to see a list of the courses. \n“A college degree should be available for anyone who desires one\,” said Bastyr University President Charles “Mac” Powell\, PhD. “To be able to help those interested in obtaining one and achieve their goals is something in which Bastyr University wants to be actively involved.” \n“This is an important step for an initiative that already has significantly increased our body of knowledge about the most effective ways to increase the number of Americans able to earn a college degree or credential by using education\, training and life experiences gained outside a formal classroom\,” said ACE President Molly Corbett Broad. \n“Nontraditional students who often are balancing multiple family and career demands now know where they can turn to take courses that will help them reduce the time and expense required to gain a postsecondary degree or credential at a number of outstanding institutions\,” said Deborah Seymour\, ACE assistant vice president for education attainment and innovation. \nACE will be collecting anonymized data from Bastyr University and the other participating institutions regarding the number of credits each institution accepts through this project as well as progress and success rates of students who transfer in consortium-approved courses. \nThe project is made possible by a $1.89 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. \nABOUT BASTYR UNIVERSITY \nBastyr University is internationally recognized as a pioneer in natural medicine. SUMMARY:Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Epidemiology\, Pathophysiology\, Diagnosis and Treatment
DESCRIPTION:Share This ArticleCurrent research indicates that the prevalence and impact of NAFLD is continuing to increase\, making NASH potentially the most common cause of advanced liver disease in coming decades. \nThe term NAFLD encompasses a wide range of conditions\, ranging from macrovesicular steatosis\, NASH which is fatty liver with inflammation\, fibrosis\, and cirrhosis. NASH represents the more severe end of the spectrum of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and differs from the simple accumulation of fat in the liver\, which has a more vague set of symptoms and diagnostic criteria.\nHowever\, NAFLD is associated with higher levels of glycated haemoglobin\, triglyceride: high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio\, insulin resistance\, and liver enzymes (alanine aminotransferase\, aspartate aminotransferase\, and y-glutamyltransferase). NAFLD is universally considered as the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome (MS) and insulin resistance is regarded as its key pathophysiological hallmark. Symptoms of NAFLD are vague\, but it has a strong association with central obesity\, reduced glucose tolerance\, type 2 diabetes mellitus\, arterial hypertension and hypertriglyceridaemia. \nTo register\, please visit www.seroyal.com/education/programs-and-courses/non-alcoholic-fatty-liver-disease-nafld-epidemiology-pathophysiology-diagnosis-and-treatment.html \n†These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
