SUMMARY:Resolving Cancer Related Cognitive Impairment and Cancer Related Fatigue: The 2 Most Common and Persistent Complaints of Long Term Cancer Survivors
DESCRIPTION:Share This ArticleNaturopathic Webinar 17\n \n\n\nResolving Cancer Related Cognitive Impairment \nand Cancer Related Fatigue:\n\n\nThe Two Most Common and Persistent Complaints of \nLong Term Cancer Survivors\n\n\n \n\nPart 1 of 2: \n\n\n\nCancer Related Cognitive Impairment\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, January 30\, 2017\n6:30 – 8:30pm\n\n\n\n2 CEs | 2 CEs for California LAc\n\n\n$75 members  |  $95 non-members\n\nwith Dr. Nalini Chilkov\, LAc\, OMD\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCourse Overview\n\nWith continued improvements in disease-free survival after cancer treatment\, there are increasing numbers of cancer survivors\, currently over 15 million in the US alone with projections for 19 million by 2024 and 26 million by 2040. During the treatment phase\, over 75% of all adult patients complain of fatigue and cognitive impairment. Even 20 years after treatment\, many adult cancer survivors still suffer from persistent fatigue\, depressive symptoms\, poor memory\, poor attention\, difficulty with multitasking\, and a decrease in executive functions. \nCancer related cognitive impairment may be severe\, persistent\, and more disruptive than pain and may not resolve with tumor control or treatment cessation. A highly individualized health-focused integrative approach is required to identify functional factors and select appropriate interventions for resolution. \nChemotherapy\, radiotherapy\, hormonal\, and biotherapies\, in addition to cancer biology itself are associated with increases in inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species in the brain.  Immune cells respond to inflammation traverse the blood-brain barrier and increase local inflammation in the brain\, affecting emotional and cognitive function. These patients often show loss of grey and white matter and functional and structural changes that resemble accelerated brain aging. In addition to neuro-inflammation and neurotoxicity\, cancer survivors can also experience myelosuppression\, hepatotoxicity\, nephrotoxicity\, chronic pain\, microbiome \, endocrine\, and sleep disruption. \nInterventions including natural compounds\, acupuncture\, functional foods\, diet and lifestyle modifications\, and brain rehabilitation therapies can be used to prevent damage and restore function and quality of life to these patients allowing them to return to full and productive lives after treatment. \nAttend this presentation to confidently:\n \n1. Understand & Identify the long-term sequela of cancer and cancer treatment related cognitive impairment and accelerated brain aging in cancer patients and survivors. \n2. Understand & Identify potential pathophysiologic mechanisms of cancer and cancer treatment related cognitive impairment and accelerated brain aging in cancer patients and survivors. \n3. Be able to identify and use nutriceuticals\, phytochemicals\, functional foods\, lifestyle interventions and integrative therapies to prevent damage and restore normal function to cancer patients and survivors suffering from long term cognitive impairment and accelerated brain aging effects of cancer and cancer treatments. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\nNaturopathic Webinar Directions\n1. SUMMARY:Webinar On HIPAA Enforcement Activity - Learning from the Mistakes of Others
DESCRIPTION:Share This ArticleTraining Options Duration: 90 Minutes \nThursday\, January 11\, 2018 | 10:00 AM PST | 01:00 PM EST \nOverview: Now that the HIPAA rules have been in place for more than a dozen years\, the days of advice and counseling have been replaced by a hard-nosed enforcement attitude\, where HHS OCR is ready to make health care organizations that violate the rules feel some pain for their actions. \nIf your organization is not ready\, the HIPAA rules have new\, significantly higher fines\, including mandatory minimum fines of $10\,000 for willful neglect of compliance. In addition\, HIPAA enforcement has taken on a new importance at HHS; officials have publicly stated that enforcement is now a priority\, and that means being ready for an audit or compliance review is more important than ever. \nIf you don’t take the proper steps to ensure your patients’ rights and health information are being protected according to the HIPAA Privacy\, Security\, and Breach Notification Rules\, you can be hit with significant fines and penalties. With the increased HIPAA fines beginning at $10\,000 in cases of willful neglect\, following the privacy requirements\, providing good information security\, and being in compliance are more important than ever. \nIn this session we will review the HIPAA enforcement actions that have taken place and examine why the enforcement took place\, and what could have been done to prevent the incident that led to the enforcement. We will look at the requirements that were not met and discuss what HIPAA entities need to do to ensure that the proper policies\, procedures\, training\, and documentation of their application are in place to prevent problems and limit the organization’s exposure in incidents. \nIn this session we will also discuss the HIPAA audit program and how it works\, and discuss the areas that caused the most issues in the 2012 and 2016 audits. We will explore what kind of issues and what kind of entities had the most problems\, and show where entities need to improve their compliance the most\, and also explore the typical risk issues that lead to breaches of health information and see how those issues may be a target for auditors in the next round. \nWe will discuss the HIPAA audit and enforcement regulations and processes\, and how they apply to HIPAA covered entities and business associates. We will explain the recent changes that increase fines and create new penalty levels\, including new penalties for willful neglect of compliance that begin at $10\,000. \nThe results of prior enforcement actions and HHS audits (and their penalties) will be discussed\, including recent actions involving multi-million dollar fines and settlements. In addition\, new trends in information security risks will be discussed so you can start to plan for the work you’ll need to do to stay in compliance and keep patient information private and secure. \nWhy should you Attend: HIPAA enforcement is now a significant reality\, and settlements for violations are being announced more and more frequently. Now\, with the increases in breach reporting and the new random audit program\, enforcement of HIPAA is something that every HIPAA entity and business associate needs to be aware of and prepared for\, by examining why prior enforcement occurred and what could be done to prevent such problems. \nHIPAA Compliance requires that you be prepared to handle Protected Health Information properly and follow the requirements in the HIPAA Privacy\, Security\, and Breach Notification Rules. If there is a problem that comes to the surface\, through a complaint\, breach\, or audit\, an enforcement action can result. Enforcement actions include financial settlements that can reach into the millions of dollars\, as well as Corrective Action Plans that can take years to complete and can cost many times the expense of the monetary settlements. \nViolations originated from such simple things as returning copiers to the leasing company without removing the PHI on the hard drive\, moving offices without accounting for hard drives stored in a closet\, and improperly disposing of printed materials\, that all could have been prevented with the implementation of policies and procedures and training on them. Several settlements for violations involve improper consideration of the requirements in the Security Rule\, which calls for extensive policies and procedures based on an accurate and thorough entity-wide risk analysis. \nEvery entity under the HIPAA regulations needs to know why the enforcement actions took place and what could have been done differently to prevent the violations that led to enforcement\, so they can avoid those issues and their significant impact. Failure to do so can lead to financial settlements\, fines\, and/or corrective action plans that can severely impact your organization. \nAreas Covered in the Session:\nThe HIPAA Privacy\, Security\, and Breach Notification regulations (and the recent changes to them) and how their compliance will be evaluated in enforcement circumstances\nRecent changes to the HIPAA enforcement regulations that increase fines and create new penalty levels\, including new penalties for willful neglect of compliance that begin at $10\,000\nThe information and documentation that needs to be prepared in advance so that you can be ready for an enforcement review or an audit without notice\nThe results of prior HHS enforcement actions and audits (and their penalties)\, including recent actions involving multi-million dollar fines and settlements\nQuestions asked in prior audits and enforcement reviews\nIdentification of weaknesses in organizational compliance\nFuture threats to the security of patient information\nThe importance of a good compliance process to help you stay compliant more easily \nWho Will Benefit:\nCompliance Director\nCEO\nCFO\nPrivacy Officer\nSecurity Officer\nHIPAA Officer\nChief Information Officer\nHealth Information Manager\nHealthcare Counsel/Lawyer\nOffice Manager \nSpeaker Profile \nJim Sheldon-Dean is the founder and director of compliance services at Lewis Creek Systems\, LLC\, a Vermont-based consulting firm founded in 1982\, providing information privacy and security regulatory compliance services to a wide variety of health care entities. \nSheldon-Dean serves on the HIMSS Information Systems Security Workgroup\, has co-chaired the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange Privacy and Security Workgroup\, and is a recipient of the WEDI 2011 Award of Merit. He is a frequent speaker regarding HIPAA and information privacy and security compliance issues at seminars and conferences\, including speaking engagements at numerous regional and national healthcare association conferences and conventions and the annual NIST/OCR HIPAA Security Conference in Washington\, D.C. \nSheldon-Dean has more than 30 years of experience in policy analysis and implementation\, business process analysis\, information systems and software development. His experience includes leading the development of health care related Web sites; award-winning\, best-selling commercial utility software; and mission-critical\, fault-tolerant communications satellite control systems. SUMMARY:How to Attain Perfect Well-being with Flower Essences
DESCRIPTION:Share This ArticleThis seminar delves into the conscious wisdom of Nature. It instructs students in a yogic approach to flower essence assessment\, based on stimulating the client’s existing positive qualities. We will focus on techniques to help our problems virtually shrink in size in relation to our inner growth; on our ability to find solutions where none previously seemed accessible through the correct selection of flower essence regimes; and how to find more easily and quickly the happiness that all human beings seek. We will use introspective exercises as well as partner and group work as tools. We will also delve into botanical information and folklore related to each of the 20 Spirit-in-Nature Essences. The instructor also uses music – guitar and vocals – to convey the messages of these essences. \nAfter completion of this seminar students will be able to: \nDe-mystify flower essences as a holistic modality.\nMake these essences their own – in other words\, to feel comfortable using them.\nExperientially have the tools to add flower essences to their existing supplements or therapies for the benefit of their clients.\nHave a solid working understanding of the philosophy of flower essences.\nHave a direct experience that words cannot give: a direct experience and an inner knowing of these flower essences.\nInitiate the process of beginning to “just know” which flower essences are the “best” ones for their clients\, and in which sequential order to recommend them. This is a pivotal issue among students and practitioners alike.\nView instructor video: https://youtu.be/oz1rzbvfHH8 \nCourse prerequisite: Pre-reading of: “The Essential Flower Essence Handbook.” *This textbook is not included in the price of the course.\nLila’s book may be available for purchase at the Bastyr Book store or Amazon.\nPlease bring a notebook.\nPlease wear comfortable clothing\, bring a back pillow if needed.\nPlease Bring: Personal water bottle (filtered water dispensers available on campus to refill).\nLocation: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus\, room #133. \nBastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. \nAlso\, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus. \nComing from out of town?
