University’s student housing is honored as Outstanding Multifamily Project of the Year
Kenmore, Washington (November 19, 2010) — Bastyr University is pleased to announce its new Student Village just won the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Outstanding Multifamily Project in the 2010 LEED for Homes Awards, announced last night at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Chicago, IL.
[protected]”We are extremely happy to accept this award from the USGBC for our Student Village,” said Bastyr University President Daniel K. Church, PhD. “To win such a prestigious national award highlights the level of commitment Bastyr University has to sustainable housing and overall healthy living.”
The innovative, eco-friendly village, which opened in June 2010, is comprised of 11 halls that can house up to 132 students. One such student is naturopathic doctoral student Rolando Fulgencio who said, “The Student Village provides an environment where I can focus on my future in style and comfort.”
Among the many qualities that helped the buildings win the award are its high efficiency water heaters and gas boilers, energy-efficient appliances and light fixtures, low-flow plumbing, natural ventilation, radiant-heat flooring made of finished concrete, sustainable landscaping, and “butterfly” roofs to capture rainwater.
This is the second significant accolade in recent months for Bastyr University’s student housing. In September, the Student Village won LEED platinum certification, becoming the first student housing project on the west coast to receive the highest green building classification.
“Our original plan was to achieve LEED gold certification. So to surpass our goals, win LEED platinum certification and now be selected as the Outstanding Multifamily Project is deeply satisfying,” said Bastyr University Director of Facilities Daniel Clark.
