According to an article posted online by Scientific American, one of the purposes of the Paris climate agreement is to limit warming to “well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. To meet that goal, emissions reductions are going to have to accelerate.
The average global temperature change for the first three months of 2016 was 1.48 degrees Celsius. In February, the global temperature was unfortunately 1.55 degrees Celsius just more than the target. That was the first time the temperature target had been surpassed in any month. All these temperatures are in relation to an early industrial baseline from 1881-1910.
The researchers note that if we continue along the current trend, the world would cross the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold in 10 to 15 years. They suggest that drastic steps need to be taken to make sure we don’t hit that threshold for the entire year.
