Book Review: Principles and Practices of Naturopathic Botanical Medicine, Volume 1

Book Reviews, Education

Stacie Deyglio, ND

Principles and Practices of Naturopathic Botanical Medicine is an innovative 3-volume series created to serve the needs of botanical medicine students in the classroom and to augment clinical study by practitioners in private care. The follow-up sequences are anticipated to be published 1 volume each year from 2011 to 2012. Volume 1, Botanical Medicine Monographs, contains more than 250 botanical medicine monographs based on contemporary research that are prepared in a hardcover handbook.

Volume 1 is designed specifically as an educational textbook for courses in botanical medicine at naturopathic medicine colleges or at conventional medical or pharmacology schools offering complementary and integrative healthcare courses. The book unites traditional herbal wisdom with the most recent evidence-based research study. Such herbal traditions covered in the volume include Western herbalism, energetics, homeopathy, and eclecticism, as well as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic botanical medicine. Beyond this content, the emphasis is on contemporary research in phytochemistry and pharmacognosy. To date, this is the most current textbook on botanical medicine to successfully extend substantial clinical research into different but equally thriving herbal approaches to healing.

The design of the volume classifies more than 250 monographs by body system, from cardiovascular to respiratory systems. The individual monographs focus on phytochemical constituents, pharmacology, actions, indications, and dosing, emphasizing safety, interactions, toxic effects, contraindications, adverse effects, and precautions. Key features include integrations in Traditional Chinese Medicine protocols for a specific herb, homeopathic symptom pictures, and eclectic-specific indications. There is a quick clinical reference guide that condenses key constituents, actions, and indications.

This volume includes all herbs identified for study in the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations. The book also offers a flexible outline for a course in botanical medicine, inclusive with a curriculum guide, statement of teaching goals and learning outcomes, resources list, and illustrative problem-based case studies. Volume 1 also provides an independent prescribing reference and serves as the companion text for Volume 2 (Fundamentals of Naturopathic Botanical Medicine) and Volume 3 (Advanced Botanical Medicine).
