Dark Chocolate Prevents Diabetes & Inflammation: Amount Matters

Naturopathic News

Increased dark chocolate consumption strengthens protection against diabetes, inflammation, and vessel problems, while avoiding weight gain

Dark chocolate’s protective compounds prevent diabetes, reduce inflammation, and improve blood vessel function – and these benefits grow stronger with higher consumption. Research shows clear advantages over milk chocolate, with specific benefits for different age groups.

These effects come from compounds five times more concentrated in dark versus milk chocolate. The benefits appear particularly strong in adults under 70, with men showing more pronounced responses than postmenopausal women. Dark chocolate improves insulin sensitivity, reduces inflammation markers, and enhances blood vessel function.

Most striking for weight-conscious patients: while milk chocolate increased weight by 2 pounds per daily ounce, dark chocolate showed no weight gain over 20 years despite similar calories. This finding held true regardless of consumption amount, suggesting dark chocolate’s compounds help offset its calories.
