Dr. Oz Nominated to Head CMS

Appointment Ushers In Potential Health Insurance Reform

As President-Elect Donald Trump prepares for the White House, his list of nominees for various government positions grows more controversial. Earlier this week, Trump nominated Mehmet Oz, MD to head the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

The nomination of Dr. Oz, a former heart surgeon and television personality, signals major potential changes to federal insurance. CMS insures more than 160 million Americans with Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and the Health Insurance Marketplace. While the focus for CMS has been to serve seniors and low-income populations, Oz has shown support for the expansion of affordable healthcare to everyone.

“The complex array of payers in our hodgepodge payment non system that has created a massive administrative burden would shrink significantly — and once instituted, the universal Medicare Advantage plans should be obligated to reduce excess administrative costs by a third,” Dr. Oz and George Halvorson, former Kaiser Permanente CEO,  wrote in their opinion piece for Forbes in 2020.

The reform would allow people to qualify for less expensive options than what they have now. Under the proposed model, every American would be on Medicare Advantage, which provides lower-cost coverage through private insurance plans.

“He will also cut waste and fraud within our country’s most expensive government agency, which is a third of our nation’s healthcare spend, and a quarter of our entire national budget,” Trump said, after announcing the nomination on November 19.

The controversy lies in the fact that Oz previously owned stock in UnitedHealth Group, the largest Medicare Advantage insurance provider for CMS. Speculation persists on whether Oz still has these conflict of interest ties. His Senate campaign disclosures from 2022 indicate he also owned stock in CVS. And Oz has been reported to flip-flop about the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

When Oz ran as a Republican for the Pennsylvania Senate in 2022, he faced controversy about his prior residency. And the list goes on. During the 2022 election, Oz was defeated by Democrat John Fetterman.
