CCNM CELEBRATES 31st CONVOCATION

TORONTO, May 25, 2010 – The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) will honour its 2011 graduating class at the College’s 31st convocation on Friday, May 27, at the University of Toronto’s Convocation Hall.

“This year’s 116 graduates join an accomplished group of alumni who are changing the face of health care in Canada,” says Dr. Bob Bernhardt, president and CEO. “They are the future of health care—and today they take with them the tools to improve Canadians’ overall levels of health, control health-care spending, and prevent and manage chronic illness.

“Each graduate has a minimum of seven years of post-secondary education culminating with an intensive and challenging four-year program of basic and clinical sciences and practice. During their final year, while serving as interns, they have each demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the health of their patients.”

Dugald Seely, ND and director of research at CCNM will give the honorary address on behalf of his father John Seely, PhD, who will be posthumously awarded this year’s Honorary Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine Award. Dr. Seely was a palliative care consultant for the Ottawa Hospital’s Palliative Care program. He held a Doctorate in Physiology from McGill University and was the former dean of the Faculty of Medicine for the University of Ottawa. During his career, he served on numerous in-house committees and many external boards. He had written many reports and reviews; gave talks on palliative care, received numerous awards; had over 40 publications, as well as numerous book chapters and abstracts. Dr. Seely also served on CCNM’s Board of Governors in 2008. He passed away in June 2009.

The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) is Canada’s premier institute for education and research in naturopathic medicine. CCNM offers a rigorous four-year, full-time doctor of naturopathic medicine program. The College educates, develops and trains naturopathic doctors through excellence in health education, clinical services and research that integrate mind, body and spirit.

Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are primary healthcare practitioners. Interns at CCNM’s Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic improve their patients’ health by identifying and treating the underlying causes of illness, employing therapies such as lifestyle counselling, nutrition, botanical medicine, acupuncture/Asian medicine, manipulation, homeopathic medicine, and hydrotherapy/massage.
