American Botanical Council finds sponsor for Coffee Fruit Research

Naturopathic News

FutureCeuticals, Inc. has recently adopted Coffea spp., Rubiaceae through the American Botanical Council’s (ABC’s) “Adopt-an-Herb program. ABC’s “Adopt-an-Herb” program provides support for the ABC’s HerbMedPro database. The database is a comprehensive, interactive web service which provides access to scientific and clinical research on more than 250 herbs.

Coffee fruit, refers to the entire cherry, which includes the bean. Coffee fruit supplies lower levels of caffeine and high levels of antioxidant activity through phenolic compounds, as well as riboflavin. Current research concentrates on antioxidant properties, as well as the effects on cognition as well as physical performance. Studies to date have suggested that coffee fruit increases the production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) (1), making it clinically relevant in many conditions of cognitive decline such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease.

With the support of FutureCeuticals, ABC looks forward to adding more up-to-date scientific research related to coffee fruit into the HerbMedPro database.

email-photoNode Smith, associate editor for NDNR, is a fifth year naturopathic medical student at NUNM, where he has been instrumental in maintaining a firm connection to the philosophy and heritage of naturopathic medicine amongst the next generation of docs. He helped found the first multi-generational experiential retreat, which brings elders, alumni, and students together for a weekend campout where naturopathic medicine and medical philosophy are experienced in nature. Three years ago he helped found the non-profit, Association for Naturopathic ReVitalization (ANR), for which he serves as the board chairman. ANR has a mission to inspire health practitioners to embody the naturopathic principles through experiential education. Node also has a firm belief that the next era of naturopathic medicine will see a resurgence of in-patient facilities which use fasting, earthing, hydrotherapy and homeopathy to bring people back from chronic diseases of modern living; he is involved in numerous conversations and projects to bring about this vision.
