CALLING ALL NDs – What is the ‘Future of Naturopathic Medicine?’

Naturopathic News

Node Smith, ND

Throughout the naturopathic profession, conversations have been emerging regarding the future of the profession within student groups, educational, professional and specialty organizations, and among practicing NDs.

Summit on the Future of Naturopathic Medicine

You may have heard about the emergence of some structure and intention to this important conversation that’s been happening across our profession this year.  You may have even attended the kick-off of this conversation, the Summit on the Future of Naturopathic Medicine at the AANP Convention in July.

Over 100 individuals in our field came together

Over 100 individuals in our field came together as part of this facilitated conversation to be heard, to identify key themes that need to be addressed as we move forward as a unified profession, and to lay the groundwork for facilitating a culture of collaboration.

Naturopathic Medicine Collaborative (NMC)

The conversation is being hosted by the Naturopathic Medicine Collaborative (NMC) with the goal of hearing input from all individuals and organizations that care about the profession’s future and ultimately unifying around an action agenda that will best serve the health of patients, the public, and the planet.

The NMC is inviting all NDs, and naturopathic students to join in on the next step

The NMC is inviting all NDs, and naturopathic students to join in on the next step of this process.  On the morning of Saturday, November 10, the next session of this ongoing conversation is happening through a state-of-the-art virtual discussion.  This will be the first of 3 such virtual discussions planned through late spring 2019.  The plan for this session is to focus the conversation on two crucial topics identified in July.

Topics:

“Our core identities as naturopathic doctors,” and “Our shared goal of building a positive professional culture”

Everyone is urged to register and to participate in this monumental event. Registration can be done by following the link below, or at FutureofNM.org.

Node Smith, ND, is a naturopathic physician in Portland, OR and associate editor for NDNR. He has been instrumental in maintaining a firm connection to the philosophy and heritage of naturopathic medicine among the next generation of docs. He helped found the first multi-generational experiential retreat, which brings elders, alumni, and students together for a weekend camp-out where naturopathic medicine and medical philosophy are experienced in nature. Four years ago he helped found the non-profit, Association for Naturopathic ReVitalization (ANR), for which he serves as the board chairman. ANR has a mission to inspire health practitioners to embody the naturopathic principles through experiential education. Node also has a firm belief that the next era of naturopathic medicine will see a resurgence of in-patient facilities which use fasting, earthing, hydrotherapy and homeopathy to bring people back from chronic diseases of modern living; he is involved in numerous conversations and projects to bring about this vision.
