Psyche: Stress, Adaption & Change
November 7, 2010
The psyche is not a thing but a process, a capacity to change and to adapt. All disease, whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual, is in essence the failure of the being to adapt to a changing environment. Whether the disease is manifested as a viral infection or depression, it is the organism’s inability to adapt that allows degeneration of function. Stress is also not a thing but information, body-mind information on the need for adaptation. This is called allostasis and the failure to adapt is called allostatic load.
The seminar will look at neurotransmitters produced in the gut and stress hormones produced in the HPA axis and ANS and their affect on mood and thought. The whole being from cells to thoughts, from behaviour to digestion and from feelings to physical function is a system. The clarity for treatment of psychophysical diseases that are so common today is based upon modulating the stress system and allostatic load.
Treat the root, and the plant will thrive. Treatment protocols will involve whole body-mind systems and will help you, as practitioners, to treat the underlying pattern behind these failures to adapt.
This seminar explores the integration of traditional and orthodox medicines, of bringing rational scientific understandings to ancient insights. Dr. Weber will look at the parallels between the san jiao and the theory of vagaltone forwarded by Porges and Cozolino.
The focus is on evidence based approaches to treatment involving both botanical and isolate approaches. The initial portion of the seminar is devoted to research on the subject, while the latter focuses on treatment protocols. Dr. Weber’s seminars involve a cross-over of information so that both NDs and LAc’s will find the information useful. NDs will be introduced to Chinese herbs and their clinical usage free of TCM jargon, and use Western terms in a bio-medical model. LAc’s will be introduced to Western concepts as well as new herbs and specific compounds to use in treatments.
Upon completion you will be able to:
- Discuss the physical basis of emotional/psychological disturbances and differentiate their origins.
- Discuss traditional and historical approaches to ‘spirit’ disorders from a contemporary perspective, in other words a modern and scientific approach.
- Describe how to use botanical medicines to treat psychophysical disturbances.
- List effective clinical protocols for treatment according to presentation of symptoms.
