Outside the Box: Creating Art as Meditation
June 11, 2011
Do you find it difficult to “just meditate”? When we sit and do our breathing during mediation many of us can’t seem to quiet that chattering voice inside our heads, so we just get frustrated and give up. However, there are other roads to meditation which can help promote balanced mental health, sound physical health and improved performance.
One “way in” that Katy has found to be effective is through the practice of a few artistic techniques that will open you up to focus and flow. This is art that anyone can do regardless of their artistic talents or prior training. The main effort is to let go of judgment, pre-conceived notions, negative self-talk and self-criticism.
In a quiet environment, this completely experiential workshop will help you explore art meditation practices that you can easily do just about anywhere, with a minimum of time, preparation and materials. You will have the opportunity to creatively play with a variety of media to create and take home an “altar box” to use as a future meditation focus.
The “altar box” concept comes, with permission, from Nancy Shapiro http://commonthreadcoaching.wordpress.com/ life coach and counselor,
and brings together disparate elements to create a refreshed state of mind. You are encouraged to bring small items (maximum of one inch on each side) to combine with natural objects and other bits and pieces that the instructor will provide. (Workshop fee includes $10 worth of materials.)
Upon completion of the seminar you will be able to:
- Describe the basic concepts of meditation.
- List the health benefits of meditation
- Demonstrate basic artistic concepts including color, shape, line and form.
- Practice quieting the mind using the art techniques taught in the class.
- Create an “altar box” for future meditation focus.
