According to the John Hopkins School Bloomberg School of Health that was published in JAMA Internal Medicine, there is a link between certain acid-reflux drugs and an increase in kidney disease risk. The study included more than 10,000 individuals and the results were replicated in a larger study comprised of nearly 250,000 individuals.

These drugs that keep acid-reflux in check are available by prescription and over-the-counter with some familiar brand names being, Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid and are used by more than 15 million Americans. These drugs are Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs).

In the study, the mean age was 63.0 (5.6) years, and 43.9% were male. Compared with nonusers, PPI users were more often of white race, obese, and taking antihypertensive medication.
