WHO: Bastyr University’s Department of Nutrition and Exercise Science, in partnership with Premera Blue Cross, will host a group of local children and their families and participate in a one day program FREE of charge to get started on a path to a healthier lifestyle.
 
WHAT: Active Pediatric and Parental Lifestyle Education (APPLE) Core program. APPLE Core program strives to educate both children AND their parents about the prevention of childhood obesity.
 
WHEN: Saturday, September 10, 2011 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
 
WHERE: Bastyr University campus 14500 Juanita Dr. NE, Kenmore, WA 98028.
 
WHY: Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in our country; therefore, Bastyr University and Premera Blue Cross are teaming up to offer overweight children and their families a special one-day event. The program promotes healthy living strategies and teaches children and their families about health, nutrition and exercise. With the obesity rate nearly triple what it was in the 1960’s and nearly one in three American children considered overweight, it is important educate families now in order to lay the groundwork for a lifetime of good health.
 
HOW: APPLE Core is unique in that it is not a weight-loss program; rather it takes a holistic approach to wellness focused on the entire family that includes:
 
*Whole-food nutrition education
 
*Integrative physical activity
 
*Behavioral therapy
 
*Health education to promote healthy lifestyle choices
 
*Family culinary training to prepare healthy, balanced meals
 
Participants will be served a gourmet whole-food lunch, receive a gift certificate to purchase healthy groceries, make dinner together as a family and will take home free APPLE Core T-shirts. Most importantly, they will spend quality time learning about how to incorporate healthy lifestyle behaviors in an educational setting.
