SBRT: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment

Have you integrated behavioral health into your practice? SBIRT as a comprehensive, integrated public health approach for the delivery of early intervention for individuals with risky alcohol and drug use, including a timely referral to treatment for those who have substance use disorders. SBIRT can be provided in a variety of medical and community healthcare settings and has found to be effective for diverse patient populations. Not to be inclusive of substance use, the components of an SBIRT-like approach is also effective for other behavioral health conditions such as depression, trauma, and other anxiety-related disorders. Providers and physicians are most likely to see patients when they first become depressed and are most capable of initiating and monitoring treatment. Multiple sources site that at least half of patients with active depression seen by physicians remain undiagnosed and therefore untreated. SBIRT is relevant. SBIRT is proven and SBIRT works! SBIRT is also a billable service with most commercial insurances.
