Digestive Wellness: Six Principles for Restoring Digestive Health

February 12, 2013

Presented by Jeremy Appleton, ND
Length: 60 minutes
Cost: Free

As with many other physiological processes, digestive function can decline with age. A core naturopathic tenet is that health and dysfunction of the gut is at the core of whole-body health and disease. As we age, enzyme output, stomach acid production, and bile secretion all decline; microflora balance is altered; peristalsis is reduced. As a result, many patients self-medicate with over-the-counter aids that may temporarily resolve digestive discomforts, but do nothing to address the underlying issues at the root of their problems.

Age-related digestive decline can manifest as nutrient malabsorption, or as GI complaints such as occasional gas, bloating, or constipation. If left unaddressed, they have the potential to lead to undesired consequences, affecting the immune system, energy levels, hormonal balance, neurologic function, bone mineral density, and even cardiovascular health.

Dr. Appleton will discuss physiology, research, and clinical perspectives that support a protocol for restoring healthy digestion and related metabolic and physiologic functions throughout the body.

OBJECTIVES:
• To enhance practitioners’ comprehension of the aging process as it relates to gastrointestinal physiology and pathology, and the impact of GI function on other organ systems.
• To enhance practitioners’ competency and skills in the application of supplements useful in the gastrointestinal system.
• To review new and established research on natural therapies (i.e., botanical, nutritional) for GI function.
