This webinar will provide the participant with information on the evolving field of genetic polymorphisms and the potential impact of these genetic variations on the body’s ability to process both pharmaceutical drugs and natural health products. The first part of the webinar will provide an introduction to the area of genetic polymorphisms, what they are and why we, naturopathic doctors, need to be aware of these polymorphisms. There are various technologies available to evaluate the DNA for polymorphisms. A review of these technologies and their strengths will be discussed. The second half of the webinar will focus on clinically relevant gene-drug, gene-herb and gene-nutrient interactions that either increase the risk for adverse events, or could lead to no benefit. Several cases will be presented to highlight key areas and reinforce the material.

Deborah Kennedy, MBA, ND, PhD is a licensed naturopathic doctor in the province of Ontario and a graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM). Deborah completed a 2 year residency at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine deepening her experience with patient care. Deborah was the recipient of a three year career development grant from the SickKids Foundation and completed her PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Dr. Gideon Koren. Deborah’s research activities focus on the interactions between natural health products and pharmaceutical drugs, and the safety of natural health products in pregnancy and lactation. Deborah continues to practice on a part-time basis, lecture and TA.
