The House recently approved HR 3204, a bill that would give the FDA broad new authority to regulate compounding pharmacies. Now the bill is before the Senate. It is anticipated that this bill will be fast tracked to be voted on October 28th.
The legislation is intended to address concerns about the safety of compounded medications – since an outbreak of fungal meningitis last fall killed 55 people and sickened more than 700 nationally. That outbreak was directly attributable to a contaminated steroid produced by a compounding manufacturer in Massachusetts.
