The Hormone Diet
Given that there are over 16 hormones affecting our ability to lose weight and that any hormonal imbalance has the potential to fully sabotage a weight loss effort, Dr. Turner’s The Hormone Diet provides an insightful knowledge base that takes precedence when compared to any literature pertaining to weight loss.
Throughout the chapters, Dr. Turner accomplishes three main goals. In Part I of the book, she first describes the importance of having a healthy hormonal balance for men and women at any age and/or stage of life. She aptly includes two harmonious chapters that work together to describe, Your fat-loss foes: The hormones that pack on the pounds and Your fat-burning friends: The hormones that help, “If you can uncover the subtle signs and symptoms of imbalance, you can take the right steps to fix it and increase your chances of losing fat and keeping it off (pg. 38).
The second goal she accomplishes, included in Part II, is to clearly explain the lifestyle habits necessary to restore hormonal balance. Also in Part II of the book, Dr. Turner accomplishes the purpose of showing the reader how to balance all of the hormones that influence weight. She accomplishes this via a 3-step program: Step 1 is to renew and revitalize, Step 2 is to replenish the body and balance hormones, and Step 3 is to restore strength, vigor and radiance. “So many factors come together to create your total health picture. Your sleep, energy level, tolerance for exercise, memory, outlook on life, self-esteem, ability to laugh, sex life, [etc.] are all factors that influence your overall health. Changes or disruptions in any of these areas are early warning signs of hormonal and health imbalance. You have to pay attention to and be aware of what’s going on in your body and life” (pg.134). Part I of the book is most aptly titled “Your Hormones, Your Body” and Part II is titled “The Three-Step Fix”.
The Hormone Diet is fully supported with the most current evidence-based, scientific research and recommendations to help people achieve the awareness they have been seeking. Along with advice for weight loss, Dr. Turner also provides recommendations for an anti-inflammatory detoxification, nutritional supplementation, exercise, sleep, stress management, toxin-free skin care, and natural hormone replacement. She also includes a personalized diet program that, of course, focuses on the essentials of hormonal balance for lasting health and weight reduction.
