A Therapeutic Yoga Approach to Addressing Scoliosis (YOGA – 15SCOL01)

January 24, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Confounded by how to ease the chronic discomfort of scoliosis, either for yourself or for your clients? Scoliosis is a complex condition that can create a variety of physical symptoms from mild discomfort to debilitating pain and organ dysfunction. Come and learn how therapeutic yoga can address the muscular asymmetries caused by spinal curvature through active and passive postural work, specific breathing practices to help de-rotate the spine, and how to help yourself or your clients live and rest more comfortably in their bodies. Sun, Jan 24, 10 a.m-5 p.m. Instructor: Robin Rothenberg. (5.5 CEUs, PDAs)

Description: While most of us have mild asymmetries right side to left, those living with scoliosis have a three dimensional asymmetry that can put additional strain on the lungs and internal organs. Breathing and digestion can be inhibited and movement through life painful. The jigsaw puzzle of scoliosis often presents a challenge for yoga teachers and other bodywork and movement professionals.

This workshop is designed as a teaching clinic for both practitioners and those living with scoliosis to encourage all to see outside the box of traditional asana. We’ll customize practices to address each quadrant of the spine appropriately: rt/left thoracic; rt/left lumbar. Utilizing an array of tools and most importantly a way of understanding the particular structural needs of those living with moderate to severe scoliosis, this course offers a means to bring balance and relief to areas of chronic tension and pain to those suffering with curvature of the spine.

Please identify whether you have scoliosis when registering for the course.

Upon completion of the seminar you will be able to:

  • Identify and define the difference between structural and functional scoliosis.
  • Learn how to see scoliosis and interpret the spinal curvature from a muscular perspective.
  • Develop adaptations of asanas that specifically stretch or strengthen each of the four quadrants of the spinal musculature appropriately.
  • Learn to utilize rotational breathing to increase awareness and diminish spinal torsion.
  • Learn how to prop yourself or your client to ensure greater ease when resting.

Please bring: Yoga mat, large towel or blanket, and comfortable clothes for movement. Personal water bottle (filtered water dispensers available on campus to refill).

Location: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus, room #146. Bastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. Also, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus.
