Statistics Canada reported in 2012 that 17% of the population aged 12 or older has hypertension and these are only going to climb further. Hypertension and malignant hypertension are risk factors in the development of acute renal failure, congestive heart failure, encephalopathy, heart attacks (MI) and strokes. A review of the commonly prescribed hypertensive medication and diuretic medication will be discussed before focusing on the use of plant-based bud medicines called gemmotherapy.

The remedies uniquely contain all the energy of the plant, concentrated in the bud and can address numerous cardiovascular issues at once compared to specific parts of the same plant. For example, the gemmotherapy Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha) has both the medicinal properties of the fruit that act on the cardiac muscle, as well as those of the flowers that act upon the cardiac rhythm. Several case studies will highlight how a combination of single and complex gemmotherapy remedies can be part of a holistic naturopathic approach to effectively manage hypertension.

Mark Orbay, ND graduated from the National College of Natural Medicine in 2003, and received his Bachelor of Science from McGill University in Microbiology and Immunology. He incorporates biotherapeutic drainage, lifestyle and nutritional counseling, Bowen Therapy and live blood cell analysis in his eclectic practice at Family Naturopathic Clinic in Ottawa, Ontario. Dr. Orbay also worked at Health Canada with the Canadian Blood Secretariat and the Natural Health Products Directorate. He is a member of the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors, the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors, as well as the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
